Belbroughton Cricket Club Est 1863
The Sunday XI action from the bowl.
This week’s Sunday fixture proved to be a memorable one for a lot of reasons
After watching the overseas pro turn up to the club extremely tired, with his initiation into Worcester the night before. He was given the bad news of, once again, the toss being lost and us having to bowl first.
Roy Maidment and Stevens Number 1 - Theo, opened the bowling bowling with very good swing and got the 2 openers out very cheaply.
Old Georgians Number 3 came in and started to take the game away from us, not giving us a chance. The spin twins of Pete Dickinson and Tom Flowers then bowled with lovely flight and some good lengths to get us through some overs, Pedro getting the wicket he deserved.
Stevens Number 2 - Todd, not due to bowl because of ankle injury then stepped up and got the number 3 out just past 50 and we had them 106-4 at drinks.
The second part of the innings we chipped away and at 30 overs they were looking at a score excess at 220 plus, but some reliable death bowling from Todd kept the total down to 201-9. Todd finishing with fantastic figures off 4-24 off 8. An excellent catch from Adam Burrows being one of those wickets
Tea came and went, Akshay wanted to sleep and we were out to bat, struggling to find Olly Dix an opening batting partner. Harry Shaw stepped up and hit 2 gorgeous drives for 4, earning some high praise from Matt Evans in the pavilion.
Old Georgians spinners toiled away leaving us 36-5 after 15. Karvaski joined Akshay in the middle, 36-5 became 37-7 with our overseas star playing the Piccadilly line and the ball being on the Bakerloo line.
Theo then walked out to bat and with us facing down the barrel of a 150+ run defeat and his brother stood at square leg, we planned to bat for as long as possible.
With Karvaski feeling good at the crease for once and planning to be there at the end, Ryan Cook had other ideas. With the bowler about to start his fifth over from the bottom end, about to release the ball, there’s a loud shout of bowlers name from the scorebox… Another shout from midwicket of ‘it’s the same one!’, a poor shot is played and Karvaski is bowled. All will be forgotten in time.
Young Tom Flowers walked out at 80-8 hoping to get past 100 which could have been considered a victory for us.
Theo then chipped away towards the total and all of a sudden was racing and with every run that was being scored, the more stick his older brother was getting! And that is why he is the number 1 Stevens! Theo eventually got out for a fantastic 45 and everyone in the ground was devastated for him to fall agonisingly short of 50, a knock he and his family should be proud of.
The innings was wrapped up shortly after and from us being 37-7 to finishing 125 all out was really great effort, especially Theo and Tom for getting some valuable runs for the team, Tom finishing on 16 not out.
Old Georgians CC - 201/9 (40 Overs)
Belbroughton CC - 125 All Out (34.4 Overs)
